Chapter Ten

“Uhhh, all of us?” Frank asked nervously.

“Just Mark,” Mori said as he inclined his head toward me in a nod and motioned for me to follow him back into the elevators.

He was wearing a dark navy suit, still with a vest beneath the tailored jacket and a pocket square made of soft cream silk. He had gold cufflinks and a gold chain in his vest pocket that no doubt attached to a watch that cost more than my entire life, and his jet-black hair was slicked back and away from his face in his usual style. His shoes were made of supple brown leather and squeaked slightly with every movement, and he smelled rich with a cologne that I probably couldn’t even outright buy in a store.

“Lead the way,” I said and nodded back to him respectfully.

There was a hush in the common area at just Mori’s mere presence, and I could feel several eyes honed in on me as the leader of our academy talked quietly to me.

Something was up.

Mori didn’t tend to leave his penthouse, least of all to come and see me, and he certainly never made a habit of appearing in the midst of the fledgling common room. He’d normally send for someone to request my presence.

I just stepped to the side so the rest of my gang could filter out of the elevators and into the fledgling common room.

Then I locked eyes with Dahlia again, and she just blinked, with her usual emotionless face devoid of any expression that might give away what she was thinking. I wondered what had happened to her in the warehouse, but Mori was still staring at me expectantly, so I just nodded to my team as I turned back to the elevators.

Mori followed me inside and quickly pressed the ‘P’ button on the brushed chrome side panel. The doors slid closed, and the elevator started to take us upward, but he didn’t say another word to me on the entire ride.

I found myself desperately wanting to break the silence, but I wasn’t sure of what to say, so I remained quiet and waited for the elevator to finally stop at his living quarters.

He extended a hand and motioned for me to walk out of the elevator first, and I did as commanded and waited for him to brush past me. He made another silent motion, this time to the couches, and I took a seat as he immediately headed to the bar.

To my surprise, he didn’t pull out expensive bottles of liquor and crystal tumblers. Instead, he leaned down to the refrigerator and pulled out two bottles of beer. He popped them both against the bar and then crossed his apartment with purposeful strides to hand me one.

I took it with a gracious nod of thanks and waited for him to say something. Mori took a long swig from his own bottle of beer before he flopped down onto the couch opposite mine, crossed his legs, and threw an arm across the backrest.
